Going through some old portfolios, I discovered that my grandfather Arvid, my mother Jean and I had all painted almost exactly the same scenes at our cottage in Go Home Bay, Georgian Bay. This was the inspiration for an exhibition "Art in the Family" at the Elora Centre for the Arts in Elora, Ontario in 2011.
Our three different styles are the result of the three different types of training we each received in different countries.
My grandfather learned his craft in Italy in 1920.
My mother studied in Beijing, China in 1948.
I was trained in New York and Paris in the 1970s.

It's the same subject passed through three different cultural filters and techniques.
These are installation shots of the exhibition that was at the Elora Centre for the Arts.
The show compared pictures of the same scene by the three professional artists of the Skoggard family. This pair is by Arvid, circa 1950 and Jean circa 1970.
This is by me. We all painted the red canoe.
